Holding company Waste Management, formerly USA Waste Services, tops the heap in the US solid waste industry (Allied Waste is #2). Through subsidiaries, the company serves about 21 million residential, industrial, municipal, and commercial customers in the US and Canada. Its four geographic groups and two functional groups (Recycling and Wheelabrator) provide waste collection, transfer, recycling and resource recovery, and disposal services. In 2007 its sites included 277 landfills, 341 transfer stations, 99 material recovery facilities, 108 beneficial-use landfill gas projects, and 16 waste-to-energy plants. In 2008 the company made a bid to acquire Republic Services but was rebuffed.
