Valhi Company Description
Valhi's idea of heaven seems to be variety. The company's NL Industries unit, operating through subsidiary Kronos, is a leading maker of titanium dioxide pigment, which is used to whiten and add opacity to fibers, paper, paint, and plastic. Other subsidiaries include CompX (ergonomic computer support systems and office security products), Tremont (titanium metal products for the aerospace and other markets through its stake in Titanium Metals), and Waste Control Specialists (operator of a hazardous-waste treatment facility in Texas). Chairman Harold Simmons controls more than 90% of Valhi through Contran Corporation, and thus has control over all of the above companies.
