The Tampa Bay Lightning joined the National Hockey League as an expansion franchise in 1992 and won its first Stanley Cup championship in 2004, defeating the Calgary Flames in a seven-game series. Winning the championship title has helped boost home game attendance at the St. Pete Times Forum. The Lightning franchise was first awarded to Hall of Fame player Phil Esposito, who was backed by Japanese golf and resort company Kokusai Green. A group led by Oren Koules and Len Barrie acquired the team in 2008.
