Spurred by Napoleon "an army travels on its stomach" Bonaparte, the canning process was developed in the early 1800s. Two hundred years later, Silgan Holdings -- through subsidiary Silgan Containers -- is the #1 maker of metal food containers in North America. Its steel and aluminum containers are used by customers such as Campbell Soup, Del Monte, and Nestlé to package soups, vegetables, meat, seafood, and pet food. Silgan also makes plastic containers used by personal care and pharmaceutical companies through Silgan Plastics, as well as metal, composite, and plastic closures for the food and beverage industry. Co-chairmen Philip Silver and Greg Horrigan founded Silgan and together own about 33% of the company.
