Progress Energy Company Description
Without progress, millions of people would be without energy. Progress Energy provides electricity to 3.1 million customers. It serves customers in North and South Carolina, through utility Carolina Power & Light (dba Progress Energy Carolinas), and in Florida, through Florida Power (or Progress Energy Florida). The company generates most of its energy from nuclear and fossil-fueled plants and has a total capacity of more than 21,000 MW. In a move to refocus on its core retail and wholesale power businesses, in 2007 the company shut down its Competitive Commercial Operations unit and exited its synthetic fuels business, and in 2008 it sold its remaining coal mine and coal terminal services.
