Recent Developments

Vancouver may Send Waste to US - Politicians in Vancouver, Canada voted in favor of exporting garbage to the US, if necessary, but only short-term, according to The Globe and Mail. The vote was a first step in considering a proposal by a Washington state landfill that would charge $65 per ton, the same price that the region's towns pay. The region's own landfill is nearing capacity, but Canadian alternatives haven't yet materialized.

Industry Employment Expands Fast - The waste collection industry is expanding much faster than the national average. Employment in US waste collection firms increased 9.5 percent in January 2008 from a year earlier; average national employment in the private sector rose 0.7 percent. The waste collection industry's average annual workforce rose 6.4 percent in 2007 compared to 2006.

Waste Collection Industry Raises Prices - The waste collection industry continues to charge higher prices for services. US waste collection firms asked 5.6 percent higher prices on average in February 2008 than a year earlier. The industry's average annual prices rose 3 percent in 2007 compared to 2006.

Competitive Landscape

Demand depends on the volume of waste generated, which depends on the level of economic activity and consumer spending. The profitability of individual companies depends on efficient operations, because the service is a commodity sold based on price. Big companies have large efficiencies of scale in operations. Small companies can compete successfully by offering specialized services or serving local markets. Annual revenue per employee is $200,000 at large companies, $125,000 at smaller.
