Parsons Corporation Competition
Now Viewing Parsons Corporation's competition in: Waste Management
Recent Developments
Major Firms will Merge - Waste management company Republic Services will buy Allied Waste Industries. The second- and third-largest companies in the US waste management industry will be combined into one company called Republic Services. About 100 Republic Services jobs are likely to be lost when the deal is complete.
Fuel Surcharges Increasing - Fuel surcharges imposed by waste management companies are rising in 2008, along with the price of diesel. Colorado customers of trash hauler Waste Management paid 37 percent more in fuel fees in March 2008 compared to a year earlier, according to The Denver Post. Industry experts say that even though fuel prices may begin declining, higher fuel surcharges may remain in place due to volatile oil prices.
Higher Bottle Refund Boosts Recycling Rate - The number of beverage bottles recycled in California rose 11.3 percent in 2007 compared to 2006, according to the state Department of Conservation (DOC). DOC attributes much of the rise to legislation that increased refunds through the California Refund Value (CRV) program for beverage bottles returned for recycling. CRV gives refunds for bottles that contained soft drinks, water, beer, sports drinks, juices, and coffee and tea drinks.
Competitive Landscape
Demand depends on the volume of waste generated, which depends on the level of economic activity and consumer spending. The profitability of individual companies depends on efficient operations, because the service is a commodity sold based on price. Big companies have large efficiencies of scale in operations. Small companies can compete successfully by offering specialized services or serving local markets. Annual revenue per employee is $200,000 at large companies, $125,000 at smaller.
