Recent Developments

Senators Investigate Ties Between Doctors, Device Makers - Two US senators are seeking information about financial ties between heart doctors and companies that make devices, like stents, that keep clogged arteries open, according to The New York Times. Experts say that medical equipment distributors will need to monitor developments that may affect products they offer. Iowa Senator Grassley and Wisconsin Senator Kohl have asked the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF) to disclose all financing it's received since 2003 from five device manufacturers and provide documentation of any payments and benefits CRF provided to 22 researchers. The senators say that scientific opinions about the safety and efficacy of the products differ.

More Americans Getting Health Care Abroad - Demand for products provided by US medical equipment distributors may decline because more US residents are choosing to have medical procedures performed abroad. The most common surgeries Americans seek overseas include heart procedures, orthopedic procedures, laparoscopic surgeries, transplants, and elective treatments such as cosmetic surgeries, and dental work, according to Insure.com. The cost of foreign medical treatment can be cheaper than American medical care even with the cost of air travel, lodging, and food factored in.

R&D Tax Credit Legislation Advances - The Senate approved an extension to an expired federal R&D tax credit, which may benefit medical equipment distributors if the tax credit encourages medical equipment makers to develop new products. The tax credit, which has been extended through December 31, 2009, can cover up to 20 percent of qualified R&D spending. The tax credit must be passed by the House and signed by President Bush before it becomes law.

Competitive Landscape

Demand depends on the number of people in the US receiving medical treatment. The profitability of individual companies depends on merchandising and efficient delivery systems. Large companies have economies of scale in purchasing, and highly developed infrastructure that allow for efficient distribution. Small companies can compete effectively by specializing in a product line or servicing a local customer base. Annual revenue per employee is about $500,000.
