Recent Developments

California Bans Needles from Trash - A California law that took effect in September 2008 bans the disposal of home-generated hypodermic needle waste and other medical sharps waste in the trash, home recycling containers, or green waste containers. The Medical Waste Management Act is intended to reduce waste management workers' exposure to pathogens such as HIV and hepatitis from the needle users, or pathogens that adhere to the needle from the surrounding trash. Home-generated sharps must be placed in approved containers for transport and disposal.

Waste Management Industry Fatalities Declining - The number of US solid waste industry fatalities fell from 37 in 2006 to 18 in 2007, which experts attribute to increased emphasis on improving the safety performance of workers. Adherence to the Waste Equipment Technology Association's American National Standards Institute safety standards is an important component of waste management safety programs, according to industry experts.

Wal-Mart Hopes to Cut Plastic Bag Waste - Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, plans to cut its global plastic shopping bag waste by one-third per store by 2013. Waste management companies may be negatively impacted by reduced availability of recyclable materials. Wal-Mart hopes to replace the plastic bags with reusable ones it sells for 50 cents. The company estimates that it's already sold enough reusable bags in the US since October 2007 to eliminate the need for 1 billion plastic bags.

Competitive Landscape

Demand depends on the volume of waste generated, which depends on the level of economic activity and consumer spending. The profitability of individual companies depends on efficient operations, because the service is a commodity sold based on price. Big companies have large efficiencies of scale in operations. Small companies can compete successfully by offering specialized services or serving local markets. Annual revenue per employee is $200,000 at large companies, $125,000 at smaller.
