James River Coal Company Description

James River Coal hopes the coal keeps flowing. The company operates about 25 mines in eastern Kentucky (in the Central Appalachian Basin) and southern Indiana (in the Illinois Basin) that produce some 10 million tons of coal annually. James River Coal controls approximately 265 million tons of proved and probable reserves. The company expanded in 2005 with the acquisition of Triad Mining, which brought to James River Coal the Indiana mines. More than three-quarters of its coal is sold to utilities. Georgia Power and South Carolina Public Service are its biggest customers, collectively accounting for nearly half of its business.
