Recent Developments
Lower 2008 Spending - IT spending by US companies in 2008 may not grow as much as anticipated, according to research firm Gartner, which could impact IT consulting organizations. Originally projected to grow 3.1 percent, Gartner's surveys indicate 2.3 percent growth in 2008 compared to 2007. Of those surveyed, however, only 23 percent report reduced spending; 15 percent anticipate an increase.
New Twist on H1-B - Many IT companies are familiar with H1-B, the designation for a special type of work visa that allows skilled foreign workers, including many from India, to come to the US. Amid the opening of this year's H1-B visa lottery by the US government, IT companies face new competition from Indian IT companies setting up offices in the US. An increasing number of Indian IT consulting firms are buying their US IT competitors and setting up offices to be closer to potential US clients.
Opportunity in Cross-Channeling - IT firms' retailer clients will likely expand, according to a study by Retail Systems Research (RSR). The study indicates that retailers can't grow because they're unable to provide satisfactory "cross-channeling," which refers to customers who shop or research products both on the Internet and in-store. The need for technology to create a seamless experience could improve demand for IT services from retail clients near-term, as consumers are expected to continue to ask for cross-channeling capabilities.
Competitive Landscape
Demand for IT services is driven by rapid technological advances, but spending for these expensive products depends on the health of the US economy. The profitability of companies in the industry depends on maintaining technical expertise and on good marketing. Small companies can compete effectively by specializing in market niches or by partnering with larger companies that want to offer a broad array of services. Only the large companies can provide outsourcing services to big corporate customers. Average annual revenue per employee is close to $200,000.
