Japan's economic woes put The Daiei on a diet. One of Japan's largest and most troubled retailers, Daiei (pronounced die-ay) operates about 1,000 stores through its subsidiaries and franchisees nationwide. Its retail businesses include supermarkets, discount stores, department stores, and specialty shops. Daiei, which diversified haphazardly during the 1980s, came close to bankruptcy due to its massive debts and failure to innovate; it brought in new management and implemented a restructuring plan that included closing nearly 2,000 stores. The plan has yet to pay off. Trading company Marubeni is Daiei's largest shareholder and has selected Japan's AEON to help it rebuild the company. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

Competitive Landscape for The Daiei, Inc.
Population growth and consumer tastes drive demand. Because margins are low, the profitability of individual companies depends on high volume sales and efficient operations. Large companies can offer a wide selection of products and have advantages in purchasing, distribution, marketing, and finance. Small companies can compete effectively by offering specialty products, serving a local market, or providing superior customer service. Discount stores and warehouse clubs have aggressively pursued the retail grocery market, and Wal-Mart is the largest seller of groceries in the US. Other competition includes specialty food stores, convenience stores, drugstores, dollar stores, and, to some degree, restaurants. To read the full description, subscribe now.
