This link will open in a new window Systems on Silicon Manufacturing Co. (SSMC) is a silicon foundry, or contract manufacturer, that makes semiconductors for other microchip companies. Founded in 1998, SSMC began churning out product in 2000. The joint venture is owned by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (39%) and NXP , the Philips semiconductor spinoff (61%). SSMC exclusively serves those two chip makers, NXP and TSMC, which have their own wafer fabrication plants (fabs) and offload some production work to SSMC. NXP got most of its stake in SSMC from Philips when it spun off from the Dutch giant in 2006. NXP and TSMC together bought out the SSMC stake of the Singapore government's Economic Development Board.
