Sterling Mets owns and operates the New York Mets baseball franchise, which joined Major League Baseball in the expansion of 1962. After losing a record 120 games in its first season, the team earned the nickname "the Miracle Mets" when it toppled the Baltimore Orioles for the club's first World Series title in 1969. A second championship came in 1986 over the Boston Red Sox . The Mets faced the New York Yankees in the 2000 "Subway Series" but lost to their cross-town rivals.
