Sterling Autobody Centers (formerly Sterling Collision Centers) is now in the "good hands" of Allstate. Sterling operates 60-plus body shops in about 15 states, repairing and restoring cars to their pre-accident glory. The repair chain was acquired by Allstate, a top car insurer in the US (along with rival State Farm) in 2001, an insurance-industry first. Sterling was founded in 1997 with cash from investment firms Conning Capital Partners and Berkshire Partners. The company grew through acquisitions to more than 30 shops in less than two years. Sterling now operates as a subsidiary of Allstate Non-Insurance Holdings. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

Competitive Landscape for Sterling Autobody Centers
Demand depends on car usage and the number of cars on the road. The profitability of individual companies depends on convenient location and good marketing. Large companies can maximize use of expensive diagnostic equipment and have advantages in purchasing, distribution, and marketing. Small companies can compete effectively by providing superior customer service or offering specialized services. The industry is labor-intensive: average annual revenue per worker is about $100,000. Competition includes other venues that provide automotive services, including some gas stations, car dealerships, and branches of chain stores, like Sears and Kmart. Auto repair shops perform an estimated 70 percent of repairs for out-of-warranty vehicles, according to the Automotive Service Association (ASA). To read the full description, subscribe now.
