S.A.C.I. Falabella may be more than 100 years old, but Chile's #1 department store chain is hardly showing its age. Falabella runs about 60 department stores, 85 Sodimac home improvement stores, and 30 Tottus supermarkets and hypermarkets in Chile, Peru, Argentina, and Columbia. More than 75% of the company's sales are made in its home country. Additional operations include a bank (with branches in the Falabella stores, allowing them to stay open longer than other banks), retail financial services (insurance, travel services, credit cards, and more), and real estate development. Falabella's proposed merger with Chilean grocer Distribución y Servicio was rejected by antitrust regulators in early 2008. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

    Competitive Landscape for S.A.C.I. Falabella
Population growth and consumer tastes drive demand. Because margins are low, the profitability of individual companies depends on high volume sales and efficient operations. Large companies can offer a wide selection of products and have advantages in purchasing, distribution, marketing, and finance. Small companies can compete effectively by offering specialty products, serving a local market, or providing superior customer service. Discount stores and warehouse clubs have aggressively pursued the retail grocery market, and Wal-Mart is the largest seller of groceries in the US. Other competition includes specialty food stores, convenience stores, drugstores, dollar stores, and, to some degree, restaurants. To read the full description, subscribe now.
