Pilot Travel Centers (PTC) steers truckers and other motorists to more than 300 company-owned-and-operated Travel Centers in some 40 states, as well as licensed locations in Kansas, Montana, and Nebraska. Besides selling fuel, the travel plazas house Arby's, Subway, Wendy's, and Taco Bell. PTC is expanding through licensing agreements with local travel centers, including Montana's Town Pump. As a leading supplier of diesel fuel to the trucking industry, PTC provides about 10% of the on road truck diesel consumed in the US. Established as a 50-50 joint venture between Marathon Petroleum and Pilot Corporation in 2001, Marathon sold its 50% stake to Pilot Corporation and CVC Capital Partners in October 2008. To read the full description, subscribe now.

The profitability of individual companies can vary: while QSRs rely on efficient operations and high volume sales, FSRs rely on high-margin items and effective marketing. Large companies have advantages in purchasing, finance, and marketing. Small companies can offer superior food or service. The industry is highly labor-intensive: annual revenue per worker is between $40,000 and $45,000. Restaurants compete with companies that serve meals or prepared foods, including grocery stores, warehouse clubs, delis, and convenience stores. In addition, restaurants compete with home cooking. To read the full description, subscribe now.
