The National Hockey League Players' Association is the labor union representing the interests of professional hockey players in the National Hockey League . The organization negotiates the collective bargaining agreement with the NHL as well as licensing deals, and it promotes the players' community relations activities. In 2005 impasses in negotiations between the union and the NHL led to the cancellation of the entire playing season -- a first among US professional sports leagues.
