MFA Financial (formerly MFA Mortgage Investments) has three good buddies: Fannie, Freddie, and Ginnie. This self-advised mortgage real estate investment trust (REIT) was incorporated in 1997 to invest in mortgage-backed securities and mortgages such as those guaranteed by government-related entities Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Ginnie Mae. The REIT's investment portfolio mainly consists of agency mortgage-backed securities, AAA-rated mortgage-backed securities, and cash. The REIT also invests in multifamily housing properties and in corporate securities. MFA Financial buys its securities and loans from the investment banks, savings and loans, banks, and mortgage banking institutions that originate them. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

Competitive Landscape for MFA Financial, Inc.
The health of the economy drives demand for REITs as investment vehicles. Profitability depends on the value of the properties in the portfolio, which in turn highly depends on real estate vacancy rates. Large companies have advantages in deal-making, and economies of scale in marketing, computer and infrastructure investment, and operations. Smaller companies can compete by specializing not only in real estate type, but by geography, though geographic focus can increase risks. To read the full description, subscribe now.
