LensCrafters brings eyewear and malls together. Part of the growing retail arm (Luxottica Retail) of Italy's Luxottica Group, LensCrafters is North America's largest retailer of eyewear and related services, with about 965 stores in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. The company-owned stores, mainly located in shopping malls, offer prescription frames and sunglasses (most made by Luxottica), contact lenses, and vision exams by an on-site optometrist. Most of the locations house in-store lens finishing labs. Outside North America, Luxottica operates about 165 LensCrafters stores in China and Hong Kong. LensCrafters was founded in 1983 and acquired by Luxottica in 1995. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

    Competitive Landscape for LensCrafters, Inc.
Demand is driven by demographics, fashion, and changing healthcare practices. Most important is the aging US population, which is increasing demand for eye exams and glasses. The profitability of optometrist practices depends on efficient operations and whether they also sell glasses and contact lenses. There are few economies of scale in retail operations, except that large stores can offer a larger choice of product styles. Small retailers can often compete successfully with large chains by offering a different product mix. Eyeglass purchases are mildly cyclical with the economy, as many consumers view extra glasses as an expense that can be deferred. To read the full description, subscribe now.
