Nursing mothers everywhere have a friend in La Leche League International (LLLI). The global organization promotes and encourages breastfeeding and offers information on both nursing and childrearing for parents and medical professionals. Its 7,000 "leaders" offer more than 3,000 breastfeeding support groups each month. The not-for-profit group also distributes information in more than 30 languages, including publications, videos, and audio books. La Leche League was founded in 1956 by a group of seven nursing mothers. During the 1950s, words such as "breast" and "breastfeeding" weren't used in polite conversation, so the founders took their group's name from leche, the Spanish word for milk. To read the full description, subscribe now.
