Someone's mining, lord, kumbaya. They aren't standing around holding hands while singing at Kumba Iron Ore; the company's chief assets are two mines in northwestern South Africa that produce 32 million tons of ore per year. Operating principally through subsidiary Sishen Iron Ore Company (SIOC), Kumba exports about three-quarters of its ore to 30 customers, mostly in Asia and Europe. The company also runs the Saldanha Port Operations and has a half dozen more exploration projects in various stages of development. Kumba began as a state-run operation in 1932 and began playing its own tune as a private company in 2001.
