Griffon has its fingers in a number of pies -- a wide variety of pies, in fact. Its largest division is Clopay Plastic Products, which develops and makes specialty plastic films for use in disposable diapers, adult incontinence products, medical garments, and surgical drapes. Clopay Building Products makes residential and commercial garage doors. (Both Clopay units are part of subsidiary Clopay Corporation.) Finally, Telephonics makes advanced information and communications products used in radar, air-traffic control, and defense systems. The US government accounts for most of Telephonics' sales, but the firm also serves commercial and foreign clients. The US accounts for about 70% of Griffon's overall sales. To read the full description, subscribe now.

Competition

Competitive Landscape for Griffon Corporation
Because plastic products are widely used in industry and as consumer products, demand depends on the health of the US economy. The profitability of individual companies depends on product mix and production efficiency. Large companies have economies of scale in buying raw materials and in manufacturing commodity products such as bottles and plastic film. Small companies can compete effectively by specializing. The industry is labor-intensive: annual revenue per worker is about $220,000. To read the full description, subscribe now.
