Dillard University is diligent about providing a quality liberal arts education for its students. The private, historically black institution is named after James Hardy Dillard, the former president of Tulane University , who played an active role in the education of African Americans in the South. The university enrolls roughly 2,100 students a year. In 2005 the university was forced to suspend operations for a semester and lay off staff and faculty after it was flooded in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
