Coventry University annually educates about 20,000 students, of which some 17,000 are based at its 33-acre campus in the city of Coventry. Known for its automotive design expertise, the university traces its roots to the 1843 founding of a design college in Coventry. Three colleges of art, engineering, and technology merged in 1970 to form Lanchester Polytechnic; the Lanchester name honored Dr. Frederick W. Lanchester, the Midlands automotive industry pioneer. The school's name changed to Coventry Polytechnic in 1987 and to Coventry University in 1992. The school still honors Dr. Lanchester by naming its art gallery and library after him.
