Here, fishie, fishie, fishie ... Cermaq knows it's easier to just sprinkle feed in the water and net the salmon when they swim up for dinner. The company's EWOS business is a global supplier of fish feed for farmed salmon and trout, while its Mainstream Group operates salmon and trout farms. Both businesses have operations in Canada, Chile, and Norway. EWOS additionally operates in the UK, while Mainstream Group also operates in Scotland. Cermaq also owns shares of the Unikorn grain trading firm and other grain trading and fish-farming businesses in Norway. The Norwegian government originally held almost 80% of Cermaq, but sold a chunk for nearly $170 million through an initial public offering in 2005. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

    Competitive Landscape for Cermaq ASA
Demand is driven primarily by domestic trends in fish consumption and competition from imports. The profitability of individual companies depends on efficient operations and protecting fish stock from death and disease. Large companies have advantages in vertically integrating operations from breeding to processing and packaging. Small farms, typically those that are family-owned, can compete effectively by specializing in unusual and high-end products or offering onsite fee-fishing. The industry is labor-intensive: average annual revenue per worker is around $70,000. Aquaculture competes with US livestock, poultry, and traditional fishing operations, as well as with foreign aquaculture and fishing operations that export to the US. To read the full description, subscribe now.
