The real estate investment trust owns and manages hundreds of retail shopping centers in Australia and New Zealand. Centro built a portfolio in the US, but sold off several of its American properties in 2008 to reduce debt. Before the cash crunch Centro acquired Heritage Property Investment Trust , as well as seven mall properties from fellow Aussie real estate bigwig Westfield Group in 2006. The following year the company bought New York-based New Plan Excel Realty Trust , which added more than 450 community shopping centers in 38 states to Centro's portfolio.
