Come Thanksgiving when you bow your head to give thanks, remember to thank Butterball, LLC. The company is a vertically-integrated turkey processor (meaning it does it all, from egg to table). Butterball produces fresh and frozen turkey products (including many of the T-Day birds that grace America's tables) for the retail grocery and foodservice industries throughout the US and about 20 other countries. It boasts the world's largest turkey-processing plant (675,000 square feet), located in Mt. Olive, North Carolina. It also operates breeder, growing, and research farms; diagnostic labs; feed mills; and hatcheries. Competitive Landscape for Butterball, LLC
Demand for meat, poultry, and dairy products is driven by domestic food consumption trends. The profitability of individual farms depends on efficient operations. Large companies have advantages in vertically integrated operations and economies of scale. Small operations can compete effectively by supplying local markets, specializing in heritage breeds, or raising humanely treated or hormone-free animals. The industry is labor-intensive: average annual revenue per worker for all US livestock and poultry farmers is $100,000. To read the full description, subscribe now.
