This new Library of Alexandria sits just a stone's throw from the site of the ancient library of Alexandria. That fabled repository was burned, and its vast trove of cultural treasures lost forever, in 48 BC. The modern library offers far more than just books. It's built to hold up to 8 million volumes, and is also the site of three museums, five research institutes, six art galleries, a planetarium, and a conference center.
