Bank Negara Malaysia is central to its country's economy. As Malaysia's central bank, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) is charged with promoting a stable financial system. As part of its work, BNM issues currency; sets interest and exchange rates for the country; regulates financial institutions (including Malaysia's Islamic banking system); manages the country's payment and settlement systems; oversees programs to combat money laundering and terrorism financing; and establishes and implements monetary policies and programs, including an initiative to promote development of small and medium enterprises throughout Malaysia.
