Ailing German retail group Arcandor AG operates department stores in Germany under the Karstadt, KaDeWe, and Oberpollinger banners, among others, as well as Karstadt sporting goods stores. Its Primondo home-shopping business runs mail-order firm Quelle in Germany and abroad, as well as some 15 other specialty catalog and e-commerce ventures. Stung by weak consumer spending and a downturn in the department store sector, the firm filed for bankruptcy in June 2009. Arcandor's lenders took control of its majority stake in the Thomas Cook travel group -- its biggest moneymaker -- in September 2009 and sold the shares on the stock exchange.
