This link will open in a new window Ailing German retail group Arcandor AG operates department stores in Germany under the Karstadt, KaDeWe, and Oberpollinger banners, among others, as well as Karstadt sporting goods stores. Its Primondo home-shopping business runs mail-order firm Quelle in Germany and abroad, as well as some 15 other specialty catalog and e-commerce ventures. Stung by weak consumer spending and a downturn in the department store sector, the firm filed for bankruptcy in June 2009. Arcandor's lenders took control of its majority stake in the Thomas Cook travel group -- its biggest moneymaker -- in September 2009 and sold the shares on the stock exchange.
