This link will open in a new window American General Finance (AGF) is the principal North American consumer financing arm of insurance giant American International Group . The firm originates and services first and second mortgages and loans for automobiles and other goods. Most of its mortgages are categorized as subprime or nonprime loans. AGF also provides credit insurance and related products through subsidiaries Merit Life Insurance and Yosemite Insurance. The company operates about 1,400 offices in the US, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Faced with a severely troubled mortgage market and lowered credit ratings, AGF in 2008 shut down its wholesale origination operations, slowed down its new lending, and closed some 180 branch offices.
