Alcor Life Extension Foundation is all about the future. The foundation, a provider of cryonics services, is the largest operation of its kind worldwide. Alcor has enlisted more than 840 members and has frozen some 80 people and animals in the first step to resuscitating them someday. Patients are frozen or "suspended" using liquid nitrogen -- which typically costs more than $150,000 for the process -- and stored in containers called "Dewars." Neurosuspensions (head-only) are $80,000 and whole-body suspensions are $150,000. Cryonic suspensions are usually funded through life insurance policies but some are paid for outright. Baseball great Ted Williams became the foundation's 50th suspension in July 2002. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

Competitive Landscape for Alcor Life Extension Foundation
Demand for services is driven mainly by the number of older Americans. The profitability of individual companies depends on sales and marketing and efficient operations, because local demand is relatively fixed. The main advantage of large companies is their ability to share resources (limos and hearses, embalmers, and marketing costs) among clusters of funeral homes. Small operators can compete successfully with national companies because the funeral business is intensely local. The industry is labor-intensive: annual revenue per employee is around $130,000. To read the full description, subscribe now.
