Beating out McDonald's as the first registered franchise in California, Abbey Carpet Company has become one of the nation's top franchise operations. The company runs a network of about 800 independently owned and operated stores across the US, the Bahamas, and Puerto Rico. It sells brand-name carpet at mill-direct prices, as well as area rugs; hardwood, laminate, and vinyl floorings; ceramic tile; and window coverings. It also offers its own line of carpet and home fashion products. Founded in 1958 by Milton Levinson, Abbey Carpet began as a single floor-covering store in Sacramento, California.
