A subsidiary of diversified mining firm Grupo México, ASARCO operates mining and copper smelting activities primarily in the southwestern US. Each year its mines produce around 400 million pounds of copper, as well as silver and gold as byproducts of the copper production. It also produces copper rod and billet. Those mines and smelting facilities are located in Arizona and Texas. The company has been operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection since 2005. Four years later, UK miner Vedanta used its Indian subsidiary Sterlite Industries to try to buy ASARCO for $1.7 billion. Grupo Mexico has countered with its own plan to retain control of the company. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

    Competitive Landscape for ASARCO LLC
Demand comes largely from the manufacturers of durable goods like motor vehicles, machinery, containers, and construction steel. The profitability of individual companies depends largely on efficient operations, because most products are commodities sold based on price. Big companies have large economies of scale in production. Accordingly, most producers of secondary products buy raw metal from the large producers. Small companies can compete by operating efficient local mini-mills or producing specialty products. The industry is capital-intensive: average annual revenue per worker is close to $300,000. To read the full description, subscribe now.
