CapitalSource is a real estate investment trust (REIT) with segments devoted to commercial finance, healthcare leasing, residential mortgage investing, and banking. Its commercial lending arm provides tailored financing and lending products to middle-market businesses. Its healthcare unit provides lease financing to skilled-nursing facilities and invests in long-term care facilities. The residential mortgage division invests in home loans backed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. It acquired the asets of Fremont Investment & Loan from troubled Fremont General in 2008. CapitalSource is active mainly in the US, but also has clients in Canada and the UK.
