CAI International Company Description

CAI International (formerly Container Applications International) is one of the world's leading lessors and managers of shipping containers. Its fleet (66%-managed; 34%-owned) has about 754,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of capacity. Its leasing segment offers short-term, long-term, and finance (giving the lessee the option to purchase the container at the end of its term) leases. In the late 1990s CAI (which was founded by chairman Hiromitsu Ogawa as a traditional container leasing firm in 1989) shifted its focus to managing containers owned by container investors. The company primarily leases containers to container shipping lines. CAI filed for an IPO in May 2007.
