FDA Seeks Security for Drug Supply Chain - The FDA is tightening security of the US pharmaceutical and prescription drug supply chain, over which the 50 states individually have the most influence currently. Biotechnologies Help Raise Biofuel Crop Yields - Biotechnologies have helped increase production of agricultural feedstock needed for biofuels. Sustainable and economic production of agricultural feedstock for biofuels is a goal of the agricultural, industrial, and biotechnology sectors.

Four Biotech Firms Go Public Fourth Quarter 2007 - Four venture capital-backed biotechnology IPOs occurred in fourth quarter 2007, with a total venture-backed offering of $320.5 million, according to the National Venture Capital Association. The biotech firms represented about 13 percent of the quarter's IPO total and 10.5 percent of the monetary total. Boston, San Jose, and Chicago each had at least one biotech IPO.

Competitive Landscape

Demand for biotechnology products and services is driven primarily by the willingness of insurers to pay for new medical treatments. The profitability of individual companies depends on the discovery and effective marketing of new products. Because the market for potential products is so large, small biotechnology companies can co-exist successfully with large ones if they have expertise in a particular line of research.
