Bio-Rad Laboratories makes a most excellent array of diagnostic testing systems and life science research instruments. Among its more than 8,000 products are equipment and reagents used in monitoring diabetes, detecting antibiotic-resistant infections in hospital patients, and diagnosing autoimmune disease. It sells these diagnostic products primarily to hospital and reference laboratories. Its life sciences segment makes laboratory equipment -- including tools used for imaging, gene transfer, and chromatography -- used by medical researchers at drug companies, university labs, and government research facilities. The Schwartz family owns about a third of the company.
