Big 5 Company Description
Big 5 Sporting Goods has outgrown its name. The company, which started out with five army surplus shops in 1955, is a leading sporting goods retailer with more than 380 stores in a dozen mostly Western states, including California, Washington, and Arizona. The company sells brand-name equipment and clothing for indoor and outdoor activities such as camping, hunting, fishing, tennis, golf, and snowboarding. Big 5 has stuck with a neighborhood-store format instead of opening massive superstores. The company plans to open about 15 stores per year. The family of co-founder and chairman emeritus Robert W. Miller and his son, chairman and CEO Steven, own about 10% of Big 5 Sporting Goods.
