Mall rats in need of new shoes might step into Bakers Footwear. The mall-based vendor of women's shoes and accessories operates about 250 stores in 38 states, with more than 25 stores doing business under the Wild Pair banner. Wild Pair shops offer edgier fashion footwear to tempt women ages 17 to 29. Bakers Footwear sells dress, casual, and sport shoes, as well as boots, sandals, and accessories, targeting women ages 16 to 35. Private labels account for more than 70% of company sales. Bakers Footwear acquired 33 Sam & Libby shoe stores in 2002. The company also operates an online shoe store and in 2006 launched its first catalog. Chairman and CEO Peter Edison currently owns about 10% of Bakers Footwear.
