Recent Developments
Cannes Festival may Yield Fewer Distribution Deals - Early reports from the May 2008 Cannes Film Festival indicate that US studios and independent distributors weren't making many deals, according to Variety. Specialty films like those that debut at Cannes didn't do well with US audiences during the fall 2007 season, Variety reports, and acquisition executives reportedly have lower spending budgets. Fewer distribution deals could translate into fewer specialty films in theatres in coming months, unless activity increases at the Sundance and Toronto film festivals.
Ticket Prices Rise More Slowly for Movies than Sports - Consumer prices for movie tickets are rising slower than for sporting events. US prices for admission to movies, theatres, and concerts increased 0.8 percent in April 2008 from year-earlier levels; admission to sporting events rose 4.6 percent. Average annual ticket prices for movies, theatres, and concerts increased 3.9 percent in 2007; 4.7 percent for sporting events.
Industry Employment Rises in First Quarter 2008 - Movie theatre employment has fluctuated over a decade, but trended upward each month during first quarter 2008 compared to a year ago. US employment in motion picture and video exhibition grew 2.7 percent in March 2008 from year-earlier levels. Average annual industry employment increased 1.9 percent in 2007, but declined 1.6 percent over five years.
Competitive Landscape
Personal income and leisure time drive demand. The profitability of individual companies depends on securing access to popular movies and sales of high-margin food and beverages. Large companies have advantages in negotiating with movie distributors; marketing; and economies of scale in purchasing. Small companies can compete effectively by specializing in movie type or audience, or providing better service and amenities. Average annual revenue per worker is $80,000.
