ALLTEL Company Description
All together, ALLTEL is a leading wireless telecommunications network operator. The company has more than 13 million customers and its network covers most of the US. ALLTEL has transitioned in recent years into a wireless-only provider, with an eye toward expanding its wireless operations through acquisitions. TPG Capital and Goldman Sachs unit GS Capital Partners acquired ALLTEL in 2007 for about $27.5 billion. In June 2008 Verizon Wireless announced plans to acquire ALLTEL in a deal worth about $28.1 billion; the purchase would make Verizon Wireless the largest wireless operator in the US.
